It is not
unusual to feel that “philanthropy” is a word reserved for those whose
names we see on buildings and boulevards. The truth is that the spirit
of philanthropy reaches deep into the grassroots of our society. It is
reflected in the thousands of hours given by volunteers as much as it is
a part of each financial contribution. |
However, it is the spirit of
philanthropy that fills most of us with the desire to make a lasting
contribution to organizations whose work we care about. It is in that
spirit that I ask you to consider including Intercept Oroville in your
stewardship and financial decision making processes.
Hello and thank you for
visiting Intercept Oroville via the Internet. I am Edward W. Cotney, CPhD,
Development Director and Planned Giving Officer for Intercept Oroville.
This portion of our web site has been designed to provide you an
opportunity to donate, access on-line philanthropic planning technologies,
and access to our vast planned giving resources.
First, let me define Planned
Giving. The role of a planned giving officer is to help you accomplish
your philanthropic planning goals. Often, many of us miss golden
opportunities to complete a significant gift as we hurriedly run down the
road of life. As good stewards, we strive to provide for our families, our
community, and those around us. Naturally, we accomplish this through
employment which provides us income, the purchase and sale of good
investments, wealth accumulation, and social capital distribution (taxes).
Social capital is the portion
of your wealth that you must surrender in the form of taxes to take care
of the country. From birth, our parents taught us to be sure and pay our
taxes on time, give to those less fortunate, and be sure to make a
difference with our time, talent, and treasure.
Through Planned Giving, I help
families like yours examine their potential income, capital gains, and
estate tax exposure and explore methods to redirect your social capital to
the causes you care about. I could write pages about the wonderful
benefits our tax code provides philanthropist and how through planned
giving, we can become more efficient stewards of the resources under our
control. Everyone is a taxpayer, however, being a good steward begins with
gaining knowledge about philanthropic tax planning.
If you, your parents, or
friends of the Oroville, CA community would like to learn more about
planned giving, or would like to see an illustration designed for your
particular tax situation, I can help. If you and your professional advisor
would like to attend a training seminar or desire a personal appointment,
I would be happy to meet with you to explore your stewardship options.
Chances are, you have assets within your estate, that at some point, will
trigger large tax consequences. With proper planning, you might be able to
change that tax issue into thoughtful planned gift to benefit this
community.
You may prefer to use my gift
planning calculator to explore, in the privacy of your home, several
interactive gift planning programs.
